Unwanted pregnancy

Extract from the law on pregnancy conflicts (sect. 5):
“The consultation necessary in accordance with sect. 219 of the German Criminal Code must be carried out open endedly. It assumes the responsibility of the woman. The consultation should encourage and promote understanding, not instruct or patronize. The pregnancy conflict consultation serves to protect the unborn life.”

If a pregnant woman or a couple does not know whether they can have a (further) child, the counselors help with the decision. They inform you neutrally about assistance possibilities and the possibility of an abortion. Whether a girl or woman has the baby, or has an abortion is her decision alone. Neither the partner, nor the family, doctors, counselors nor state authorities are allowed to influence her decision.

A termination of pregnancy (abortion) is possible in the first three months of a pregnancy, if a woman has a consultation at a pregnancy conflict advice center and receives a certificate of this. There must be at least 3 days between the consultation and an abortion. Women, who earn little or no money, can apply for the costs to be covered by a public healthy insurance company, if they are registered in Germany (see below: info on cost assumption).

The counselors have a duty of confidentiality, and the counseling can be carried out anonymously on request. They also help you if you need to keep your pregnancy as a secret (see confidential birth).
